Case description
During the early hours of February 24, 1977, Rudi Grutsch and Lothar Schäfler reported intensely bright objects near Langenargen on Lake Constance. MUFON-CES investigators described two spindle-shaped objects with four brilliant lights each. After the men separated near the Waldeck restaurant, the lights reportedly returned. Grutsch watched from inside while Schäfler sought shelter outside.
Schäfler alone described two close figures, approximately 1.3 and 1.1 metres tall, appearing behind him after a whistle and slight air movement. He gave them pale skin, bald round heads, round mouths, slanted eyes, unusually long arms and contracted fingers. No noses, ears or necks were discerned. A light-green, star-pointed collar was their only distinguishable clothing. Frightened, he sought refuge at a neighbouring entrance and broke a door pane. Grutsch’s observation of lights and an indistinct shadow did not independently establish the two figures.
Brand and Schneider’s investigation includes interviews and later hypnosis. Their report says Schäfler had already described the figures before regression; additional hypnotic material must remain separate from that initial description. The catalogue’s simple humanoid label omits these witness and phase distinctions. The case remains a reported experience with disputed interpretation, rather than a demonstrated landing, boarding or extraterrestrial identification.
