Case description
William J. Herrmann reported an encounter near Summerville, South Carolina, on March 18, 1978. Contemporary coverage describes the auto mechanic leaving home to examine a recurring unusual light near the Dorchester Road area and later finding himself in a field near Bacons Bridge Road, with an unexplained interval in his memory.
Later accounts describe an aquamarine beam and an examination by small humanoid occupants. Investigators questioned Herrmann under hypnosis and examined his wider series of photographs and encounter claims. These later investigations do not make the missing interval independently observed.
The case was covered by the Charleston News and Courier in November 1979 and subsequently by Wendelle Stevens. A later catalogue also reproduces a March 17 dating, so the Atlas retains March 18 as the imported date with that discrepancy acknowledged. The illustration depicts the outdoor light encounter. The linked archival video concerns Herrmann's wider case, including his photographs, rather than constituting a recording of the claimed abduction.
