Case description
The May 16, 1979 Charleston entry belongs to William “Bill” Herrmann’s wider contact story. The North Charleston mechanic said he felt compelled to revisit a place associated with an earlier encounter and voluntarily boarded a waiting disc. This was his claimed second trip, following a March 1978 episode whose missing interval was later explored under hypnosis.
The brief catalogue makes it sound as though he received a metal bar during the May visit. Contemporary reporting instead says the inscribed, ingot-like bar allegedly appeared in his bedroom on April 21, 1979, within a blue-green glow. During the May contact, he said the occupants explained that it expressed their appreciation and promised further meetings. A later account adds a flight toward Florida and back.
Herrmann described short, pale, hairless beings with enlarged heads and long dark eyes. Those details come from his multi-event testimony, including hypnotically developed material; the accessible reports do not independently establish every feature for the May encounter.
The metal was actually available for testing. The November 1979 Charleston News and Courier and Omni coverage report an ordinary lead-antimony casting, comparable in composition to familiar terrestrial products. Investigators’ opinions about Herrmann’s sincerity and the reported hypnosis tests did not establish the events themselves. The gift’s date, the claimed return journey and the laboratory result are distinct parts of the case.
