Todmorden, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
Before dawn on November 28, 1980, West Yorkshire police constable Alan Godfrey was driving near Todmorden while investigating missing cattle. On a wet road he saw what he first took to be a bus blocking the way.
As he approached, the object resolved into a large diamond or lozenge shape with a dark band around its center. It hovered low, and wind or force from it disturbed trees and debris. Godfrey attempted to radio and made a sketch. His next clear memory was of driving farther along the road, with an unexplained interval.
Later examination of the patrol car and Godfrey's clothing produced claims of marks or disturbance, none uniquely diagnostic. Under hypnosis he described being taken into an unfamiliar room and examined by small beings while a larger humanlike figure communicated with him. Those recovered details must be separated from the conscious road observation.
The incident occurred amid other local reports, but connections to cattle deaths and broader phenomena remain circumstantial. Hypnosis added a vivid interior story without independently establishing it.
CE4 is retained because the later account alleges involuntary transport and examination. The portrait shows only the conscious wet-road encounter, preserving the reported object shape and police context. It is an illustrative reconstruction.
