Case description
On July 31, 1981, two men, both reported to be about thirty-five, were travelling by motorboat toward Lieksa on Lake Pielinen in Finland. Near Cape Vaaraniemi at approximately 8:40 p.m., they saw a dark sphere accompanied by a larger light and several smaller lights. A dark object carrying two lights reportedly approached the boat's stern, with something resembling fog surrounding it.
One man said he could still speak but could not move his body or turn his head. The men subsequently found themselves sitting in different positions in the boat. They also believed the boat had not moved as the current should have carried it. When they checked the time, it was approximately 4:10 a.m., leaving a gap of several hours between their remembered evening observation and the early morning.
Nightmares, trembling and problems with balance were reported afterward. The men contacted investigators, and attempts to obtain further information through hypnosis were unsuccessful. Contemporary summaries appeared in the December 1981 MUFON UFO Journal and February 1982 APRO Bulletin; Thomas Bullard later catalogued it as a possible abduction case. That classification is an interpretation of the missing time and reported effects. The recoverable account contains no visible humanoids, remembered craft interior or recovered onboard narrative. Its central claims remain the lights and dark object, perceived immobility, a large time discrepancy and subsequent symptoms.
