Case description

Early on August 12, 1983, seventy-seven-year-old Alfred Burtoo was fishing beside the Basingstoke Canal near Gasworks Bridge at Aldershot. His small dog Tiny was with him. The towpath, rods and quiet industrial edge of town were familiar surroundings, and Burtoo expected to remain there through the dark hours waiting for a bite. At about 1:15 a.m. a bright light descended near the canal. Burtoo said a compact object settled beside the towpath. Two short figures emerged and approached him. They wore pale-green one-piece suits with large dark visors that concealed their faces. They carried no visible weapons and did not seize him. Instead, Burtoo understood their gestures as an invitation and chose to follow them toward the open craft. Inside he found an octagonal room with a central column and additional similarly dressed figures. A voice directed him to stand beneath an amber light. The procedure sounded more like a rapid assessment than a painful examination. He was asked his age and told to turn around while the light or occupants inspected him. The encounter then ended with an unexpectedly blunt judgment. According to Burtoo, a voice said that he was unsuitable because he was too old and infirm for their purpose. He was allowed or instructed to leave. He returned to his fishing place, where Tiny and his equipment remained, and watched the object depart at around 2 a.m. He did not report a memory gap and did not describe being forcibly confined. Burtoo later told his wife, mounted police and UFO investigators. Investigator Omar Fowler found no independent observer who had seen the craft or occupants. Reports of disturbed vegetation were not supported by photographs, preserved samples or a controlled site examination. Timothy Good reproduced the account and an associated Ministry of Defence response stating that it had no corresponding reports. The absence of corroboration does not prove that Burtoo fabricated the episode, but it sharply limits what can be established. His age, the detailed setting and the understated rejection have made the story memorable. Alternative explanations include a waking dream, misperception, an invented tale or a sincere experience without an externally present craft. No authenticated image or physical artifact resolves those possibilities. The CE4 classification is retained because Burtoo described entering the object and undergoing an examination-like procedure. The Atlas also records the important distinction that he initially followed voluntarily and remembered the sequence continuously, unlike cases centered on force or missing time. Classification describes the claim; it does not certify the cause. The portrait reconstructs the opening moment beside the canal: Burtoo rising from his fishing stool with Tiny at his feet, exactly two short figures in pale-green suits and dark visors approaching, and a compact craft waiting with an amber-lit entrance. It avoids invented facial features or a dramatic abduction. The image is an illustrative reconstruction of his account.
