Case description
Donald Johnson’s original investigation dates the Bangor playground encounter to August 31, 1987, around 10:55 p.m. September 1, used in the catalogue, was when the UFO Reporting Center contacted him. Eight-year-old Randy Springsteen and ten-year-old Dennis Mauer were playing in naval-base housing when they reportedly saw a circular object illuminate the house and playground.
The boys described two figures in separate lower openings. They reported oversized heads, pointed catlike ears, greenish fur, round bluish-green eyes, long lashes, wrinkled mouths and extremely thin bodies. Dennis supplied additional descriptions of webbed extremities and fingertip suction cups. One figure allegedly operated a searchlight-like device; the boys also claimed the swings lifted. Charlene Springsteen subsequently saw a row of lights departing, rather than the creatures.
Johnson recorded interviews and drawings, but also noted the boys had been frightening one another with horror stories and questioned possible exaggeration or psychological influences. A neighbour’s separate light was probably Jupiter. No military detection record or independent observation of the figures was established. The plate shows the boys and reported furry occupants; the mother’s later sighting remains a separate stage.
