Case description
This catalogue entry derives from an ancient omen narrative rather than a modern investigation. In The Jewish War, Book 6, chapter 5, Josephus describes extraordinary signs associated with the catastrophe that overtook Jerusalem. One passage places an apparition on the twenty-first day of the Macedonian month Artemisius, before sunset: chariots and armed formations were said to appear among the clouds and surround cities.
Josephus presents the story as something related by observers, expressing awareness that it might otherwise sound like a fable. His purpose is to recount portents preceding the war and destruction of the Temple. He does not describe an alien landing, individual occupants meeting people, or a physically examined aerial machine.
The following Temple episode is separate: priests entering at Pentecost reportedly heard a disturbance and a collective voice announcing departure. It should not be transformed into an engine noise accompanying the sky apparition. Tacitus likewise recounts celestial armies and departing divine presences among Jerusalem’s omens in Histories 5.13.
The Atlas’s modernized May 21, 70 CE date exceeds the precision securely established by this literary passage. Its position among prewar signs also complicates assigning it directly to the siege year. The historical record preserves reports of extraordinary imagery and their interpretation as warnings, without establishing modern astronomical identification or extraterrestrial activity.
