Case description

A story transmitted by the sixteenth-century physician and philosopher Girolamo Cardano describes an apparition experienced by his father, Fazio Cardano, in Milan. A modern chronology dates the event to August 13, 1491, at the reported twentieth hour, although the precise conversion of that historical time notation requires comparison with an original edition. Fazio was a jurist and scholar associated with mathematics and the occult philosophy of his period. According to the passage attributed to Girolamo's De Subtilitate, he had completed customary rites when seven figures appeared before him. The visitors were human in general form and wore elaborate garments that the later text compared to Greek dress. They were not described as arriving in a vehicle, descending from the sky or carrying mechanical equipment. Their nature was presented in philosophical rather than technological terms. The figures remained for more than three hours and engaged Fazio in extended conversation. They reportedly described themselves as beings made of air and said that their lives exceeded ordinary human lifespans. The discussion concerned the nature of souls, hidden treasure and the creation or ordering of the world. The accessible summary does not preserve a reliable full transcript. The Atlas therefore does not write invented dialogue or turn broad topics into modern claims about extraterrestrial science. The figures' self-description is retained as language attributed through Cardano's text. After the long conversation, the apparitions disappeared. No aircraft, landing trace, physical artifact or independent witness is recorded in the material examined for this dossier. The event survives as a literary and family account rather than a contemporary investigative file. The source chain is unusually important. Girolamo Cardano was born after the date assigned to the event and was not an eyewitness. He transmitted a story attributed to his father in a work published decades later. Modern UFO catalogues then extracted and reframed the passage for a different audience. Vallée and Aubeck included the story in Wonders in the Sky, from which the modern date and encounter framing were repeated. That book is a useful route to the passage, but an original Latin edition, scholarly translation and historical commentary are needed to test the wording, date and cultural meaning. Calling the figures 'aliens' would impose a modern category not present in the account. They can be considered within histories of apparitions, ritual experience, Renaissance natural philosophy, family legend and anomalous experience without assuming a spacecraft interpretation. CE5 is retained because the catalogue treats the prolonged intentional conversation as a contact claim. The class describes the narrative relationship between Fazio and the figures; it does not establish their physical existence or extraterrestrial origin. The portrait reconstructs a late-fifteenth-century Milanese study, with Fazio conversing with exactly seven airy human-proportioned figures in Greek-like robes. It contains no craft, modern UFO imagery or invented treasure. It is an illustrative reconstruction of a later literary account, not documentary evidence.
