Case description
The supposed October 1871 High Wycombe encounter belongs to David Langford's fictional historical account, published in 1979 as An Account of a Meeting with Denizens of Another World, 1871. It should not be presented as an independently documented Victorian UFO event.
The framing story attributes a manuscript to William Robert Loosley and describes an extraordinary object associated with unusual mechanical or creature-like behavior. Later UFO compilations repeated elements of the tale, including lights, a box-like object, and probing appendages, sometimes without preserving the literary origin. The Hatch digest consequently contains details of a story rather than a contemporary investigation.
The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction lists the book as a work presented in the form of a historical UFO account, and Isaac Koi's bibliography identifies the modern fabrication. The plate uses a Victorian writing-and-landscape context, with a clear fiction label, instead of illustrating the box as physical evidence. The 1871 date is the setting of the narrative, not its publication date.
