Case description
An 1897 newspaper dispatch from Waterloo, Iowa, described crowds gathering around an apparent airship and a stranger claiming to be its operator. The Atlas assigns 17 April; local newspaper chronologies also reference 16 April. The story said the man kept visitors at a distance with a rifle and explained that he had stopped for repairs while attempting a journey around the world.
The reported vehicle was about 40 feet long, cigar-shaped and covered with heavily varnished canvas. Descriptions included side attachments resembling wings, steering equipment at the rear, a lookout cupola and vapor issuing from a pipe. The operator allegedly obtained permission to remain on the property temporarily. Even the contemporary dispatch allowed that the contrivance might merely have been designed to create the impression of a flying machine.
This was a constructed-airship hoax, rather than a verified landing. Local follow-up exposed the deception; later historical research identified newspaper illustrations and a photograph of the object on the ground. Accounts of the stunt give a construction cost of roughly 60 dollars. The physical mock-up and crowds do not establish that it ever flew. The plate reconstructs the human operator and handmade exhibit with an explicit hoax label, and includes no extraterrestrial occupant.
