Case description
The Beaumont story belongs to the 1897 mystery-airship wave. A Houston Daily Post report of April 21 describes brewer J. R. Ligon and his adult son Charley noticing lights in a pasture on the evening of April 19. Going closer, they reportedly encountered four men beside a large dark aerial machine.
The account described an elongated craft with four great wings, estimated at 180 feet long and twenty wide. Its crew asked for water, and the Ligons invited them to obtain it at the house. One visitor introduced himself as Wilson and said they had traveled over the Gulf and were returning toward an Iowa base. These were apparently ordinary human aeronauts, without a described extraterrestrial appearance.
Jerome Clark’s later archival study found that Ligon was a real local resident and located another report attributed to Rabbi A. Levy about a broadly similar landing. That possible overlap is suggestive, without proving both stories concern one event. Clark also found later newspaper references to Ligon exhibiting an airship model. The episode remains a period press account within a wave containing exaggerations and hoaxes; surviving testimony does not establish that the reported machine actually flew or that its engineering claims were true.
