Case description
The Rockland airship story concerns John M. Barclay in Texas during the April 1897 wave. The imported date is 21 April; later chronologies use 22 April and disagree over the newspaper issue cited. Around 11 p.m., Barclay reportedly heard his dog barking and a whirring noise. Outside, he saw a brightly illuminated, oblong object with wings and various lateral attachments. It circled and descended into a nearby pasture.
As he approached carrying a rifle, the lights went out and an ordinary-looking man asked him to put the weapon aside. The stranger used the name Smith and requested lubricating oil, two cold chisels and bluestone, offering ten dollars. Barclay allegedly obtained the oil and chisels but could not find bluestone. The man declined the returned money, shook his hand and discouraged closer inspection of the machine.
Asked about his origin and destination, Smith gave an evasive answer and mentioned Greece. He boarded, the whirring resumed and the object departed quickly. This is a newspaper airship narrative, later reproduced by Jacques Vallée and others, not an authenticated extraterrestrial encounter. Publication and event dates remain unsettled here. The explicitly human visitor should be preserved, along with the story’s period setting and uncertain credibility.
