Case description
A story circulated about an airship over Jenny Lind, Arkansas, at about 7:30 p.m. on May 4, 1897. Later historians Jerome Clark and Loren Coleman traced a fuller version through a letter published by the St Louis Post-Dispatch. As with many reports during the 1897 airship wave, the existence of a printed story is firmer than the extraordinary events it describes.
Three men reportedly pursued the object on bicycles until it landed near a spring beside a mountain. Two occupants introduced themselves as George Autzerlitz and Joseph Eddleman. They spoke English and claimed to catch birds in flight for food. The story further says one pursuer, James Davis, accepted a ride to Huntington, around fifteen miles away. These are human inventors or aeronauts in the narrative, not described extraterrestrial beings.
A mining-company manager reportedly recognized the people’s names but expressed puzzlement about the letter; that is not verification of the flight or its machinery. No surviving craft, technical demonstration or independently documented passenger journey is established here. The illustration reconstructs the alleged meeting with three representative bicyclists, two ordinary humanlike aeronauts and an approximate elongated airship. The craft’s construction and the people’s appearances are illustrative, and the caption identifies the story as an unverified period airship tale.
