Case description
A widely reprinted Arkansas airship story placed lawmen John J. Sumpter and John McLemore near Hot Springs during a rainy night in May 1897. Riding horseback, they reportedly watched a bright light descend behind a hill. Their horses became nervous as they approached. Continuing toward the light, they encountered men carrying lanterns beside a large elongated machine, generally described as roughly sixty feet long.
The account presented the crew as ordinary people, not nonhuman entities. A bearded man acted as captain, a younger man was drawing water into a large container, and a woman was present with an umbrella. The captain supposedly said the party was travelling across the country toward Nashville. When the lawmen were invited aboard to get out of the rain, they declined, preferring to remain outside. A return visit about forty minutes later reportedly found the site empty.
Newspaper versions and later compilations differ over May 6 versus May 7 and over some dialogue, making a month-level date appropriate for the plate. Sworn statements and the men’s official occupations were part of the publicity surrounding the story, but neither establishes the machine’s existence or an extraterrestrial origin. The episode belongs to the 1896–97 mystery-airship newspaper wave; its alleged crew should be depicted as human aeronauts rather than invented aliens.
