Case description
The Maesteg report belongs to the British 1909 mystery-airship wave. According to Carl Grove’s later catalogue, citing the South Wales Daily News of May 24, a rumor spread along Commercial Street around 10:30 p.m. on May 22 that an airship was passing overhead. Numerous people looked up, but most reportedly saw only lights.
One observer using a telescope claimed to distinguish people aboard the object. The consulted summary gives neither that person’s name nor a description of the telescope, occupants, clothing, range or craft structure. The claim is therefore narrower than a crowd independently resolving the same vehicle and crew. Later catalogues sometimes blur that distinction by grouping the crowd and the telescopic observation together.
Nothing in the account identifies the supposed occupants as nonhuman. No landing, conversation, approach to witnesses or recovered material was described. The term airship reflects the period’s interpretation of aerial lights, rather than an established identification of the object. The surviving publication chain preserves a contemporary newspaper reference and subsequent repetitions, leaving the single observer’s interpretation unverified. Its plate consequently uses a faint conceptual airship silhouette and indistinct humanlike crew rather than a detailed extraterrestrial craft.
