Case description

This Atlas entry combines a July 24, 1909, late-night date at Gore with references to numerous airship sightings, two lights and two figures. Fuller historical newspaper research separates several Southland and Otago events during the same wave. July 24 reports include Kaka Point and the Kelso area, while the best matching two-occupant account belongs to the early hours of July 30 near Gore. In that report, two workers at Syndicate No. 2 dredge in the Waikaka Valley saw lights emerging through mist around 5 a.m. Winchman F. Green described a narrow, boat-shaped aerial machine with two seated figures. It reportedly circled, alternately moved quickly and paused, then rose into mist and reappeared toward Otakarama. The dredgemaster later confirmed his men had called him, but said the object had gone before he reached them. That distinction limits the corroboration: the master was not an additional eyewitness to the machine. Nor does the account establish extraterrestrial occupants or a working airship’s identity. The plate illustrates the matching Waikaka/Gore-area occupant report, with a month-only title and explicit July 24/30 catalogue warning. It does not silently change the stored record date or combine every sighting into a single event.
