Case description
Contemporary New Zealand newspapers reported that two night-shift workers at the Syndicate No. 2 gold dredge saw an apparent airship at about 5 a.m. on July 30, 1909. The location was the Waikaka Valley north of Gore. Fuller historical accounts name winchman F. Green; the Hatch shorthand's three observers differs from the two direct witnesses in the newspaper narrative.
The men said lights broke through mist and a narrow, boat-shaped aerial object circled nearby. Two figures appeared to be seated aboard it. The object reportedly moved at varying speeds, rose and dipped, then climbed into the mist, leaving a yellow glow. Contemporary summaries say it continued southeast, while later compact retellings give southwest or the direction of Otakarama. These directional variants should remain visible.
The dredge master later confirmed hearing the men's story but reportedly arrived after the object had gone. He was therefore not an additional eyewitness to the craft or occupants. The episode belongs to the 1909 New Zealand mystery-airship wave, when explanations and rumours circulated widely. Newspapers document an early report; they do not establish a recovered airship or the figures' identity. No alien anatomy, speech or personal contact is described. The plate treats the seated figures as unresolved humanlike silhouettes and the machine's detailed construction as illustrative.
