Case description
During New Zealand's 1909 airship-reporting wave, a Waipawa man claimed a close view of a gray, torpedo-shaped aerial structure on the night of Tuesday, 3 August. The Hawke's Bay Herald reported the story on 6 August, and Tony Brunt later reproduced the passage in his historical survey. The rider was near the racecourse when his horse became restless. Looking up, he attributed its reaction to the object passing overhead.
Three people were reportedly visible aboard. One called toward the rider in a language he did not understand; the account supplies no actual words or indication of the speaker's origin. The structure then rose much higher, showed lights at its front and rear, circled, and disappeared behind a hill. Another resident separately reported a distant ship-like object and humming sound, while other townspeople discussed lights. Those additional reports do not independently verify the rider's close description of three occupants.
The contemporary quotation itself notes local skepticism. No name, drawing, measured distance, photograph or recovered object accompanies the account in the retrieved source. The craft's construction and the people's appearance beyond their human form remain unspecified. The plate uses a restrained airship-like torpedo and representative rider, horse and crew, without turning unfamiliar speech into nonhuman anatomy. It depicts the close passage rather than the later high-altitude circling phase.
