Case description
During July 1952, Warren Wilkey of Lewistown, Pennsylvania, reportedly saw a large round object while going to work at the American Viscose Corporation plant, where he was a car inspector. Loren Gross reproduces the contemporary claim from the Sunbury Item of 28 July, but marks the actual sighting date uncertain. The imported catalogue gives approximately 8 p.m.; the newspaper excerpt itself does not firmly establish that clock time.
Wilkey compared the object's overall size with a railroad boxcar, except that it was round rather than elongated. It appeared low in the sky, with windows around its edge and light inside. He thought that either someone was walking past the windows or a piece of machinery was rotating within. Carrying a searchlight, he directed its beam upward. The object then gained height and disappeared.
The distinction between a walking person and revolving machinery was present in Wilkey's own description. It should not be flattened into a confident sighting of identifiable occupants. The account supplies no detailed human or alien anatomy, exact altitude, measured dimensions or independent instrument record. A reported ascent after the light was shone does not by itself demonstrate deliberate communication or establish that the beam caused the departure.
