Case description

A British instrumentation engineer identified in different publications as H. M. or Henry reported an encounter in the Drakenstein Mountains near Paarl, South Africa. The Hatch entry dates it to December 1952, while the fuller UFO Afrinews account gives the summer of 1951. Both describe a late-night meeting beginning with a request for water. A man signalled the driver to stop and asked for water in an unusual accent. The witness directed him toward a stream and was invited to a circular object about a hundred metres from the road. He described an illuminated entrance and a ladder. Inside were four more men, including one who had apparently been burned in an accident. The occupants were smaller than the witness, approximately one and a half metres tall, and wore beige, laboratory-coat-like garments. The conversation included an explanation of the craft's propulsion in terms of a circulating heavy fluid and magnetism. When asked where they came from, the men gestured toward the stars. The visit lasted approximately fifteen to twenty minutes. The witness left and returned the following morning, when he reported faint marks where the object had stood. Cynthia Hind's publication preserved the narrative and a later visit to the area by investigators in 1989. The disagreement over the year remains unresolved in the surviving versions.
