Case description
At approximately 2:30 a.m. on 18 June 1953, Hilda Walker and her neighbours Judy Meyer and Howard Phillips reportedly watched a strange figure outside Walker's Houston Heights home. Later reporting identifies Walker as 23, Meyer as 14 and Phillips as 33. Walker first noticed a large shadow crossing the lawn and thought it might be an enlarged moth shadow from a streetlight. It then appeared to rise into a pecan tree.
The three described a roughly six-and-a-half-foot manlike figure with batlike wings or a cape and a faint surrounding glow. It remained on a branch for perhaps thirty seconds, then its light faded and the figure was lost from view. In the fuller account reproduced by Texas Standard, the witnesses next described a rushing sound and a white, torpedo-like flash above or beyond the houses. Phillips described a flash leaving another tree. These are subsequent light reports, not an observed boarding or a securely resolved vehicle.
Walker reportedly contacted police the next morning, and the story entered the Houston Chronicle and later unusual-phenomena literature. ABC 13's retrospective could not locate the original witnesses. The description has become known as the Houston Batman, but it does not establish the figure's nature, a biological flying humanoid or a connection with later winged-creature stories. The reconstruction labels the subsequent flash as a separate phase.
