Case description
This Brandsen report has a substantial date and testimony conflict. The Atlas ledger gives 24 May 1954, but engineer Federico Atencio's letter of 11 April 1964 dates his experience to the night of Saturday, 24 May 1952. A 1966 newspaper account instead supplied 20 September 1954. Roberto Banchs's later investigation reproduces the letter and interviews with Atencio's widow and his travelling companion, builder Mauro Esteban García. These sources should not be flattened into a single, mutually corroborated encounter.
Atencio wrote that their car developed a problem on the then-unpaved Monte–Brandsen road around midnight. They watched a luminous object for an extended period. Two approximately human forms, luminous in their clothing, allegedly moved slowly about 20 centimetres above the ground. He tried headlight and hand signals, then approached; the figures reportedly returned rapidly to an object on the ground, which rose again. He said the object remained visible as they continued to Brandsen, where an attempt to tell people at the closed YPF station failed.
García, interviewed in 1986–87 after Atencio's death, described a rapidly crossing light and a later bright, zigzagging light seen from a service station. He expressly denied seeing people, allowing only indistinct shadows within glare. His account also differs on timing and events at the station. Banchs treats the contradictions as unresolved. The ledger's concise version of two silhouettes inside a landed disc therefore preserves only one strand of a disputed reporting history, rather than an established close encounter with occupants.
