Case description
The Challes entry appears in later catalogues as a September 26, 1954 encounter involving Mr. Guyard, a short suited humanoid, a saucer and a ten-foot ground circle. The imported Atlas cites Vallée’s Challenge to Science, while Donald Johnson’s later summary attributes the story to Aimé Michel’s 1958 book. These repetitions suggest an established case, but the cited narrative presents a different event.
In Michel’s actual Guyard passage, Michel Guyard is the chief pilot at Challes-les-Eaux airfield. He reportedly thought he had seen a flying saucer during the same period as the nearby Col du Chat observations, then identified the supposed object as a flock of starlings. There is no departing humanoid or associated landing circle in that passage.
Patrick Gross’s expanded source comparison concludes that the close-encounter version arose from catalogue confusion rather than a separately established Guyard testimony. No primary interview or contemporary report supporting that visitor sequence was located in the consulted chain. The Atlas preserves the historical catalogue entry, but its description must distinguish the later humanoid story from the bird identification actually found in the cited source. The plate follows the latter account.
