Case description
The earliest located press account appeared in L’Union of Reims on October 13, 1954. It said that about ten days earlier, a father and son from Soissons reportedly saw a saucer resting in a field. A small man was climbing into it using a ladder. Rather than approaching to investigate, the two witnesses went home.
That is substantially less detailed than some later retellings. The newspaper did not identify the witnesses, give the figure’s face or clothing, establish the vehicle’s dimensions, or describe the ladder retracting and the object shooting upward. Those departure details appear in later humanoid catalogues and should not automatically be treated as part of the contemporary testimony.
There is also a dating trap. The same newspaper item separately mentioned four motorists seeing a supposed “Martian” on Avenue de Compiègne the previous Friday at 11:45. Later catalogues sometimes mix that date and time with the father-and-son field story. The latter belongs broadly to early October, at an unspecified hour. The plate follows the simple field, ladder, and small figure described in the contemporary account; the setting, clothes, and lighting are interpretive, while no detailed alien anatomy is supplied.
