Case description
An account attributed to a painter named Molenaer, sometimes rendered Moleaner, describes an encounter while he was fishing on the River Lot at Villeneuve-sur-Lot in October 1954. The date within the month is not securely established. Later catalogues place the event in daylight, sometimes at noon. The witness allegedly noticed a luminous object about 100 metres away and watched it settle gently and silently on the river.
A small figure reportedly appeared, collected river water in a bottle, and returned to the object. The entire episode was short, after which the object departed at extraordinary speed. The available narrative gives limited anatomical or clothing information about the figure. Detailed eyes, a particular species, or an elaborate suit would therefore go beyond the account. Likewise, landing on the river is a distinctive reported feature and should not be replaced by an ordinary landing beside it.
Figuet and Ruchon’s later compilation cites La Dépêche du Midi of 18 October 1954. Subsequent writers called it a prank, without supplying a clear contemporary confession or independently demonstrated mechanism in the reviewed material. Gross examines these conflicting assessments skeptically. The story remains disputed and poorly documented, with the illustration’s figure and vessel details necessarily interpretive.
