St. Jean D'angely, FR being encounter — October 1, 1954

Two businessmen, Estier and Phelippeau, reportedly encountered a small figure while returning from Royan by car on October 1, 1954. The location was La Roulerie near Saint-Jean-d’Angély in Charente-Maritime. Published summaries disagree over whether the time was about 20:00 or 22:00; the abbreviated Hatch entry uses the latter. The men said a small human-like individual crossed the road ahead of their vehicle. They stopped and watched its silhouette disappear into nearby woodland. The surviving early-style summaries give no reliable facial features, suit, eye shape or unusual means of locomotion. In particular, the imported suggestion that it might have been a Grey is an interpretation, not an anatomical description supplied by these witnesses. No craft was reported nearby. The source trail points to a Sud-Ouest newspaper account around October2 and later republication by Vallée and other cataloguers. Barthel and Brucker subsequently reported that the witnesses themselves acknowledged how uncertain the observation had been; other authors suggested an ordinary misidentification or a child in disguise. These are proposed explanations, rather than a documented confession establishing a staged hoax. The reconstruction therefore preserves the simple road-crossing sequence and an indistinct, clothed figure without adding technological equipment, an extraterrestrial face or an unsupported saucer.
