Case description
Three men travelling by car near Taupignac in Charente-Maritime reportedly saw a bright red object during October 1954. The Atlas's inherited date is October 4, while many earlier catalogues place the encounter on October 11, at approximately 7:30 p.m. Those versions appear to describe the same story, rather than two independently documented landings.
The motorists said the light revealed a round object with an orange-red dome, hovering silently above the countryside. It moved laterally and disappeared behind a small wood. Two men took flashlights and approached, while the third stayed nearer the car. In a clearing they reportedly saw four figures about one metre tall moving around the object. As the men came closer, the figures entered it. A burst or changing sequence of blue, orange and red light accompanied its rapid vertical departure.
Some retellings turn the bright flash into a deliberately disabling beam; that is not uniform across the accounts. Later skeptical authors called the story a hoax, but the source comparison supplies no clearly documented confession or investigation establishing that conclusion. The witnesses remain anonymous in the material examined. The date conflict, changing flash description and uncertain provenance limit any detailed reconstruction of the encounter.
