Case description
Joseph Roy, a thirty-year-old mechanic employed at Panhard in Reims, reportedly saw a bright reddish light near Isles-sur-Suippe during a dark October 1954 journey. Contemporary and later sources disagree between October 5, 6 and 7, and between a motorcycle and bicycle. The imported record fixes October 6, but the source history is less precise.
After the light vanished, Roy described an object in a roadside field, roughly three meters long and resembling a large artillery shell. Dim luminous openings suggested portholes. A vague dark form moved nearby. Frightened, he left without studying it closely. Three other workers were said to have noticed a light in the same area; later books also describe police examining marks in soft ground.
An alternative explanation appeared locally soon afterward. A 1958 Science et Vie reader’s letter recalled L’Union reporting British military personnel parked at the site, and later French catalogues classified the case as a confusion. More specific assertions about a helicopter and khaki-clad man occur in subsequent accounts, rather than the initial vague silhouette description. The record therefore preserves both Roy’s reported impression and the later military explanation, without inventing a detailed alien occupant.
