Case description
Jean Bertrand, a Carcassonne mechanic, reported seeing a low-flying object while driving near the town during the October 1954 wave of French sightings. Early press accounts describe a round or spherical craft with a shining metal lower portion and an upper section that appeared transparent, sometimes compared with plastic. Bertrand said he could distinguish two humanlike forms inside before the object departed rapidly toward the east or east-southeast.
The contemporary newspaper versions do not give one consistent date. Several place the observation on Saturday afternoon, 9 October, around 4 p.m.; another says Sunday evening. A local account situates Bertrand on the Limoux road near the Maquens rise. Later books relocate the episode near Arzens, Pennautier or Castelnaudary, and some turn the low aerial passage into an object standing on a road before taking off.
Those changes should not be merged into a single precise itinerary. A later skeptical retelling quotes a remark about having fun with visiting photographers, but that remark alone is not an independently established confession that the original observation was fabricated. A helicopter interpretation has also been proposed. The plate follows the early newspaper version: an airborne rounded object, translucent upper section and two humanlike occupants, with uncertain locality and date explicitly retained.
