Case description
On 14 October 1954, Rappellini and Ottaviani, two men traveling by motorcycle between Toulon and Hyères, claimed an encounter at Chemin Long. Contemporary newspaper accounts place it in the early evening, with varying times, rather than consistently at the ledger’s 9 p.m. They said a small circular craft with a domed upper section stood in a field near the road.
A human-looking man in gray-white pilot-like clothing and a helmet allegedly emerged through a triangular opening. Asked whether he was Martian, he answered that he was French and asked where he was. After being told their location, he returned to the craft. The men described a noisy vertical ascent followed by rapid movement toward Hyères and orange emissions. Their descriptions differed over landing supports and alleged burned grass, and they declined to sign statements or guide reporters to the site.
The subsequent record materially changes the case. Radar’s 31 October 1954 report characterized the affair as a flying-saucer swindle and reported proceedings against Ottaviani over obtaining refreshments without paying. Later investigators classify the story as a hoax. The illustrated scene therefore represents the original claim, clearly labeled, rather than verified flight or an alien visitor. Contemporary speculation about a secret French aircraft did not establish an identification.
