Case description
Painter Raffaele Castello was named in October 1954 newspaper reports about an alleged landing at Curzio Malaparte’s villa on Capri, Italy. The catalogue dates the episode to October 17. Contemporary dispatches dated October 19 describe a nighttime walk near Cape Massullo and appeared in French newspapers the next day. Malaparte was associated with the property, rather than securely established as a witness.
Castello reportedly saw a disc descend to the broad roof terrace. Several newspapers give its diameter as about five metres, while a France-Soir version gives a smaller object. Four short, humanlike men in suits or overalls were said to remain around it for approximately half an hour. Blue needle-like flashes came from the object. The account describes the men returning inside before the disc rose vertically and accelerated away, with a slight humming sound in one version.
The repeated newspaper versions largely transmit the same story and do not supply independent observers. Hatch flags a hoax; INTCAT assesses a probable fabrication or exaggeration by journalist Vittorio Foschini, possibly based on Castello seeing a meteor. No confession was retrieved. The illustration is consequently a reconstruction of a disputed claim: a representative painter watches four indistinct uniformed figures beside a compact disc on an approximate cliffside terrace. No reliable facial anatomy, conversation or physical evidence is established.
