Case description
On the evening of October 18, 1954, cyclists near Fontenay-Torcy and Saint-Samson-la-Poterie in the Oise reported an unusual illuminated object. Later compilations commonly give about 8:40 p.m. One account describes a reddish, cigar-shaped object descending behind a hedge and lighting the surrounding countryside. The story became part of the exceptionally active French reporting wave of that autumn.
The close encounter is associated with the Lherminier name, although published versions differ over the witnesses' names and whether one or two cyclists were present. A short, stocky figure, often described as helmeted and about one metre tall, was said to have appeared near the landing place. Orange or luminous eyes and a frightening physical reaction appear in several versions, but the accounts do not agree consistently about paralysis, fainting, or the precise sequence.
Other local observers reportedly saw an object move away, generally westward. Their aerial observations should be distinguished from the much narrower claim of seeing an occupant: the familiar total of six witnesses does not mean that six people independently saw the figure. The surviving source comparison preserves the changing newspaper and catalogue versions. It supports a historical report with unresolved details, rather than a single fully consistent reconstruction or an independently established identification of the object and being.
