Case description
The Montlandon story comes from a short newspaper item published in Le Haut-Marnais Républicain on October 29, 1954. It described the encounter as having happened about ten days earlier, making October 19 an approximate reconstruction rather than a firmly established day. The witness was a fourteen-year-old girl identified only by an initial, who was looking after cattle in a remote pasture near Montlandon in Haute-Marne.
According to the item, a disc-shaped object flew into view, landed and rolled toward a corner of the wood before rising again. The girl said she could see a man in white, described with the French word for a cassock or soutane, piloting it. The article did not say that he stepped outside, and the clothing description should not be silently converted into a detailed modern spacesuit. No unusual face or extraterrestrial anatomy was reported.
The newspaper said the Langres gendarmerie had checked the account and found the girl's story consistent, but no traces were discovered. That secondhand statement is not equivalent to having the original officers' investigation file. Later catalogues largely repeat this same newspaper source rather than adding independent witnesses. The illustration retains the young cattle herder, the disc and a white-clad figure aboard, while leaving the figure's appearance and the precise machinery necessarily approximate.
