Case description
At about 4:45 p.m. on October 21, 1954, Jessie Roestenburg was inside the family cottage at Vicarage Farm, Ranton, while her sons Anthony and Ronald were outside. A loud rushing or hissing noise made her fear an aircraft was crashing. She went out and found the boys down on the ground, looking upward at an object over the house. Her young daughter was inside; later witness counts should not be substituted for the people actually described watching this first encounter.
Roestenburg reported a dull silver disc with a transparent forward dome or panels and a revolving outer section. Inside were two humanlike figures with long faces, high foreheads, shoulder-length fair hair and blue or turquoise close-fitting clothing. They looked down without smiling. Her drawing and a next-day Wolverhampton Express and Star report give an early documentary anchor. The object was said to move around the cottage before departing rapidly; later accounts vary in size and duration.
Gavin Gibbons interviewed the family afterward and published an expanded narrative. Much later interviews added altered-time sensations and other experiences, which should be distinguished from the brief original observation. Roestenburg is frequently misspelled Roestenberg and sometimes incorrectly called Jennie. Neither those later additions nor the Atlas’s question about missing time establishes a measured lapse during the 1954 event.
