Case description
The Tradate entry belongs to a confessed newspaper hoax during Italy’s 1954 wave. A story assigned to around 10 p.m. on 28 October described a cyclist returning from the cinema who noticed a brilliant object near a sports ground and heard guttural sounds. Later summaries inflated witness numbers and sometimes shifted the setting toward Milan or Monza; the import’s 150 observers cannot be treated as independently verified testimony.
In the tale, a crowd returned and saw three figures beside a disc resting on three points. They supposedly wore white trousers, grey jackets and transparent plasticlike helmets. A dark facial prominence was compared with an elephant’s trunk, perhaps a breathing device. The object was described as partly translucent and brightly illuminated. The figures allegedly retreated aboard when people approached and threw produce, after which it rose with a whistling sound.
Loren Gross reproduces both the sensational reporting and a contemporaneous Associated Press dispatch dated 30 October. The latter says fifteen local youths admitted to police the previous night that their story was a joke; authorities contemplated penalties for spreading false reports. This is positive evidence of fabrication, beyond merely labelling an unusual account doubtful. The plate illustrates the invented press narrative and marks it as such; it does not present actual visitors, a recovered saucer or an authenticated crowd encounter.
