Pontal, Sp, Brazil being encounter — November 4, 1954

José Alves, a labourer from Pontal, São Paulo, said he was fishing alone by the Pardo River on the night of November 4,1954, when a luminous object approached from the west. He described it wobbling as it descended, then hovering approximately six feet above the ground very close to him. Its silvery form resembled two washbowls joined together, roughly ten to fifteen feet across. Three small occupants reportedly came through a side opening and jumped down. Alves described them as approximately three feet tall, with dark-brown skin, white clothing and close-fitting skullcaps. They gathered grass, herbs and leaves, while one filled a shiny metal tube with river water. He said he felt unable to run and gradually backed away, but the figures seemed occupied with their tasks rather than interacting with him. They re-entered the craft, which rose vertically and silently. Brazilian researcher Olavo Fontes published the account in the APRO Bulletin in 1957, and the Lorenzens and other catalogues subsequently repeated it. Descriptions of Alves's frightened state and ordinary character come from people who heard his story afterward; they were not additional witnesses to the landing. The sampling activity and occupants remain his reported observations, without an independently recovered sample or established craft identification.
