Official source account — 2023 annual report, printed page 19: A woman taking a cellphone photograph of the Moon at Simoca later noticed a bright point close to its upper-left side. CIAE reconstructed the star field and lunar phase in Stellarium. The simulation matched the last-quarter Moon and the position of Nu Leonis farther away, but showed no corresponding celestial body at the disputed point. An optical-geometry check instead identified the point as an internal reflection caused by the Moon's brightness. The official explanation distinguishes that reflection from the actual star visible in the image.
The summaries distinguish reported observations from the agency’s proposed explanations. Source Type A/B ratings describe explanatory confidence and are not encounter classes. The map uses an approximate GeoNames locality centroid, not the observation point.
