Official source account — 2017 annual report, printed page 45: The Campo de Mayo account concerns a luminous object reported by a Gendarmería Cessna 182 crew on 2 November 1972. CEFAE's 2017 reanalysis compared the reported time, bearing and elevation with the Rigel sounding-rocket experiment. It proposed that the crew saw an ionized cloud released shortly after the rocket's launch. The report attributes apparent following behavior to interpretation of the scene and treats the experimental cloud as its conventional explanation.
Official source account — 2018 annual report, printed page 43: The 2018 report revisits the Campo de Mayo aircrew observation of 2 November 1972. Rubén Lianza presented further evidence for a barium-cloud experiment, arguing that an ionized cloud could change shape and move along Earth's magnetic field lines. He interpreted the crew's reports of abrupt motion and changing form as compatible with that process. This account adds an official analysis to the existing event rather than describing a new 2018 sighting.
Official source account — 2025 annual report, printed page 92: This expanded review revisits a luminous phenomenon observed by a Gendarmería Cessna crew near Campo de Mayo on 2 November 1972. CIAE combined the original drawings with a new ground witness and documentary evidence of a Rigel 05 launch at 20:28. Its revised Type A conclusion attributed the visual stimulus to a barium or metallic-gas cloud released for ionospheric experiments. The report presents that identification as an agency conclusion, preserving the pilots' original interpretation separately.
The summaries distinguish reported observations from the agency’s proposed explanations. Source Type A/B ratings describe explanatory confidence and are not encounter classes. The map uses an approximate GeoNames locality centroid, not the observation point.
