Brazilian archive report — Brasília, DF — 1969-05-01

This National Archives item is a newspaper reader’s letter marked 1 May 1969, headed with a discussion of flying saucers. It is signed by a writer using the name Beny Sham‘SS’, followed by Capital. The clipping responds to letters printed on 18 and 24 April: one reader had defended the existence of flying saucers and another had challenged that view. The author says the purpose is to offer a personal opinion rather than simply defend either correspondent. The argument is philosophical. It suggests that readers should avoid judging unfamiliar possibilities solely by existing human expectations, drawing analogies with medical progress and the development of broadcasting. If human beings already investigate the universe, the writer asks, might a more advanced civilisation also be studying us? The letter expresses belief in life on other worlds and speculates about future means of seeing distant places. These are propositions and analogies, not descriptions of an object actually observed at a specified time or location. No craft, occupant, encounter witness, physical trace or investigative sequence appears in the recovered page. Its archival custody establishes that this press clipping was retained in the Brazilian UFO-related collection; it does not turn the author’s beliefs into a government finding. The imported CE 3 label is consequently a catalogue misclassification, and 1 May marks the clipping rather than a verified Brasília sighting. The illustration depicts a period reader considering a letters page, with an anonymous likeness and contextual interior. It contains no alien visitation manufactured from the letter’s extraterrestrial vocabulary.
