Brazilian archive report — Manaus, AM — 1994-09-05

An air-traffic-service memorandum dated September 12, 1994 transcribes the Manaus control logs for September 5. Varig flight VRG302, travelling from Santarém to Manaus, reported an unidentified luminous object between 0014Z and 0023Z while at flight level 310 and during part of its descent. The aircraft was initially between 140 and seventy nautical miles from Manaus; a separate approach-control entry still places the light in view at fifty nautical miles. The controllers identified another flight, TBA501, already vectored away from VRG302. According to the log, the light remained visible after that traffic had passed. During further exchanges between 0100Z and 0109Z, Commander Frota described a clear sky and a light whose apparent brightness reached three or four times that of the brightest star the crew could see. It appeared stationary, diminished and disappeared, then reappeared ahead at an estimated thirty to forty nautical miles. This repeated before it vanished. Neither the aircraft’s radar nor Manaus approach radar obtained a corresponding target. The document reports a visual light, without a resolved structure, landing or occupants. Its Z-suffix times are UTC and should not be silently treated as local civil time. The official file is evidence that the crew’s report entered the control system; it does not establish the light’s distance, physical size or extraterrestrial origin. The reconstruction therefore shows a distant point of light from a period flight deck, without an invented craft body or beings.
