BOIANAI MISSION — PAPUA NEW GUINEA — 1959
BOIANAI MISSION — PAPUA NEW GUINEA — 1959

Case description

In June 1959, the Anglican mission at Boianai in what is now Papua New Guinea became the setting for several nights of unusual aerial reports. The central witness was Reverend William B. Gill, but the observations were collective: mission staff, students and local residents joined him, and Gill's surviving notes include sketches and a witness-signature sheet. The sequence began before the best-known evenings. At about 01:00 on June 21, teacher Stephen Moi reported a bright white light descending silently offshore and moving eastward parallel to the coast. When it dimmed, he thought he could distinguish an inverted-saucer form with several dark marks underneath. Gill recorded Moi's account on June 23. On June 26, at about 18:45, Gill saw a bright white light northwest of the mission. He called other people outside as it appeared to approach and descend. Its brightness shifted toward yellow and orange, and by about 18:55 observers reported figures they interpreted as people moving on the upper part of the object. The figures repeatedly appeared and disappeared from view. A thin blue light was also reported, directed upward from the principal object. Around 19:20 the object moved into cloud. Later that evening the group recorded additional lights overhead, over the sea and in the direction of nearby villages while a larger object remained comparatively stationary. Some lights reportedly passed through low cloud and illuminated it. The larger object changed color and position through the evening. Gill wrote that around 21:30 it moved toward Giwa while shifting from white to red and then blue-green. Another object hovered overhead between roughly 22:00 and 22:30. By 22:50 cloud had covered the sky, and heavy rain followed after 23:00. At about 18:00 on June 27, Annie Laurie reportedly noticed a large object in approximately the previous night's position. Gill saw it shortly afterward and again summoned other witnesses. The observers counted four figures on its upper portion. Gill and Ananias Rarata raised their arms and waved. Figures on the object appeared to make corresponding gestures. Gill then directed long flashes from a torch toward it. After a short delay, the object reportedly made wavering motions and approached for approximately half a minute before stopping. The figures disappeared and later reappeared, and blue light was reported twice. At 19:00 the object was still visible but appeared smaller. Gill left for dinner and later church duties rather than behaving as though the mission was under immediate attack. Cloud obscured the sky by about 19:45. A loud explosive sound was heard near the mission house around 22:40, but no object was seen in direct association with it. On June 28 the notes record further hovering lights, including eight visible at once around 23:00. A sharp metallic bang was heard on the mission-house roof. Inspection the next morning found no apparent mark or dent. That negative result is retained alongside the observation rather than omitted. The Boianai material is unusually valuable because it preserves timed notes, named witnesses, drawings and signatures. Those documents establish a substantial contemporary observation record. They do not by themselves determine distance, size, the physical nature of the apparent figures or whether the gestures were genuinely responsive rather than perceived coincidence. The Atlas uses one canonical dossier for the mission sequence. Separate June 26, June 27, June 28 and later catalogue entries remain linked as event fragments and source records, not treated as entirely independent cases requiring duplicate portraits. CE3 reflects the repeated reported observation of figures associated with the principal object. The portrait reconstructs the June 27 exchange: Gill and Papuan mission witnesses face the sea, Gill and Rarata wave, exactly four humanlike figures stand on the luminous object's upper surface and a thin blue light rises above it. The local observers are central participants, not background decoration. It is an illustrative reconstruction, not a photograph of the event.
