Case description
The January 1978 South Middleton reports were part of a longer series involving the Gould and Campbell households in Massachusetts. Investigator David Webb's January 1980 MUFON article explicitly warns that the sequence is confused. On January 9, Nancy and Theresa Gould saw yellowish lights descend behind trees; Nancy recorded 7:37 p.m. A telephone interruption followed. Separately, Giles, a visiting relative, described a white-suited figure near a bedroom window and porch.
On January 10, Tom Gould reportedly saw a short figure while cutting wood. Its square grey helmet, white suit and mitten-like hands came from a composite of several encounters, rather than one detailed view. He later noticed a large, rough grey, egg-shaped object downslope. Nancy subsequently described bubble-like windows, while Allan initially saw only something resembling a boulder. Around January 12, Allan reported a disc rising from the property.
Webb distinguished the witnesses' claims from his April site examination. He found broken branches but no clear depression or environmental damage, and Tom could not securely date the branches' condition. The inherited summary's single fifty-foot saucer and three-night episode compress several unlike observations. This record retains that broader sequence without treating every family member as an independent witness to the same figure or craft.
