Case description
The January 9, 1978 South Middleton entry belongs to a longer series reported by the Gould family and investigated by David Webb and Raymond Fowler. That evening family members described a large yellow-white or orange light descending behind trees. Descriptions differed, and Nancy reported a short telephone outage afterward. Nearby relatives also reported a white-suited figure that night; these were separate observations within the wider family narrative.
On January 10 at about 2:30 p.m., Tom Gould said he saw a white-suited figure while chopping wood. It stood about ninety feet away, approximately four and a half feet tall, with broad shoulders, a squarish gray helmet, dark eyeholes and mitten-like gray hands. Webb cautioned that the detailed description combined several encounters and that the lighting and distance limited what could be seen that day. Tom spoke to it, resumed his work and later found it gone.
After driving a short distance, Tom noticed what resembled an enormous boulder downhill. He described a rough dark-gray egg-shaped object with projecting, hooded round windows. Nancy and Allan later looked toward it, but Allan could distinguish little beyond a boulder-like form. Whether this happened that day or the next was uncertain. Probably on January 12, Allan separately reported a rising disc, seeing two long legs and assuming four.
When Webb inspected the property in April, he found no compelling depression or environmental damage at the alleged landing area apart from broken branches of uncertain age. One other alleged ground mark survived near disturbed soil. The reconstruction combines successive reported phases and labels that compression; it does not imply the figure, egg-shaped object and later disc were simultaneously observed.
