Case description
The Haverhill, Massachusetts, account is dated only to spring 1967, at approximately 2 a.m. A small airport owner’s wife reportedly awoke to a loud whirring that seemed to fill the house. After it stopped, she roused her husband, thinking an aircraft might need an emergency landing. Outside, he saw a silent object hovering above a pond between their home and the airport.
The fuller account describes two shallow metallic saucers joined together, with a very clear canopy on top. A green interior glow outlined two apparent heads; elongated openings around the rim emitted a softer orange light or flame. The man approached, shouting and gesturing because he thought an experimental aircraft was in difficulty. It moved toward the airport’s pumps and parked aircraft. When he approached again, the whirring resumed, the orange lights appeared to rotate faster, and the object tilted and accelerated away.
The yard light allegedly dimmed during departure and recovered afterward; an odour compared with burnt matches remained. NICAP cites Raymond Fowler’s 1974 book, while a fuller secondary rendering also cites page 215. Neither version supplies a precise spring date or identifiable occupant features. The light and smell are reported effects, without an established mechanism.
