Case description
Robert Cuffaut was working a tractor near Croix-aux-Moines, between Jonches and Égriseilles, on October 2,1954. Around dusk he noticed two people several hundred metres away, dressed in very light clothing. They looked toward the nearby airfield while he completed several circuits of the field, then disappeared behind a hedge. He reported no conversation or remarkable anatomy.
At about 8:45 p.m., nearly two hours later, he saw an ember-colored aerial object travel rapidly northeast. It vanished from view within seconds. His estimate of its size was explicitly an impression; tractor noise prevented him from judging whether it made a sound. Subsequent visitors reportedly found no trace in the field.
Later catalogues compressed the two observations into an entity encounter. Their proximity does not establish that the men were occupants of the later object. The illustration is consequently labeled as a composite of separate observations.
A further dispute concerns later investigators' alleged contact with Cuffaut. Jean Sider challenged their interview because Cuffaut had died, but Patrick Gross notes that an interview could have preceded his death. Neither a chronologically impossible interview nor deliberate fabrication is established by that argument. Ordinary people and a conventional aircraft remain possibilities rather than demonstrated identifications.
